Hello friends

5 min read
I haven't posted a journal since May! And since May some things have happened.

I'm now at college! I'm doing the NC Art and Design course which involves a little bit of everything. So far I've drawn some self portraits, some charcoal still lifes, make 3D paper sculptures and models using natural and man made materials. I've been making men out of heather this week. This course lasts a year and if I want, I can progress to BA Contemporary Textiles next year. I absolutely love this course and I have made some new friends and my tutor is amazing. He's an actual artist and everything. Oh man, so cool.

Going back to May, we managed to churn out a school magazine just before we disbanded for good. It went down a treat with everyone. I got to design the front cover, which ended up being a photomanip of the Eshaness cliffs. We had a number of articles which included one about sports, one about politics, and one about My Little Pony. It was great fun to put together and when the final copies came it was an amazing feeling.

I went to Glasgow in the middle of June with Young Enterprise. We were taking part in the Scottish Finals, after we beat the Anderson High School at the Shetland finals. I had a lovely time in Glasgow, and got to explore the Buchanan Galleries briefly. Our hotel room had quite a nice view of Buchanan Street. I have been to Glasgow before, but that was in 2007 and we only went to the Science Centre. Our group, Slestered Peenie, came joint first for the 'Best Trade Stand' award. Really it wouldn't have mattered if we hadn't won anything because we beat the Anderson and that was a proud achievement in itself, and we got a free trip to Glasgow! It was also the first time I had ever been on a train, and on the way to Glasgow we were diverted to Cumbernauld because a herd of cows got squashed by another train. Whoops.

Another thing that happened in June was I got to design a logo for a local music event in Shetland. It was surreal seeing my logo in the paper and seeing people I didn't know wearing /my/ design on their t shirts. Another event I did some designing for was our community hall's annual BBQ. I drew two people in a horse suit flipping burgers and running around, since the Grand National has been a recurring theme with it. By selling this design on shirts, aprons and dish towels, we managed to raise £450 for Cancer Research.

In August, my Mam and my sister got to explore parts of Muckle Roe that I'd never been to before. I'd never been to the lighthouse until then. We also walked to the Hams, which is quite something on foot. Both days were absolutely gorgeous, and I feel blessed and lucky to live on such a beautiful island.

I came joint first in the Shetland Young Writer of the Year awards again this year with a story called "Haes Du Nae Sock?" (English- You Haven't Got Any Knitting?) which was about a stuffed toy dinosaur who couldn't knit because of his short arms and was rejected by his crew. He went and sought advice from the "Wise Owld Trow" (a bit like a troll, sort of) and he stole his friends' knitting needles, tied together and got his own back. Everyone who has heard it being read has loved it, and it makes me so happy to know that some people find my work humorous. For coming joint first AND winning the dialect prize this time round, I won £100! I won't be able to enter next year, for I'll be too old. I don't do a lot of writing, but this has inspired me to write more often, and with my recent illustration ventures, I think I'll be doing just that.

Speaking of illustration, the two books I created in 2011 and 2012, will potentially be published sometime soon. If it goes ahead and all to plan, it's going to be great.

In September Ed Byrne came up to Shetland as part of his Roaring Forties tour. It was a brilliant night, and I have never laughed so much. After the show, we got to get his autograph and get our photos taken with him. Life=made.

Well that's pretty much all that's happened over the last 6 months, hopefully what's left of 2013 will be as great.
And how are you all? Are you well? Been up to much? Please tell me! I'd like to hear how you guys have been getting on.
If you read all of that then you deserve a pat on the back and you'll be in my good books for life.
